Surgical
Abortion
At A Jacksonville
Women's Health Center, our physicians perform surgical abortions
up to 20 weeks gestation. Abortion by D&E (Dilation and Evacuation)
is one of the safest and most commonly performed surgical procedures
in the United States. For this procedure, you can expect to be
in our office approximately 2 to 4 hours with less than five minutes
for abortions performed during the first and second trimester,
slightly longer for second trimester procedures (13 to 20 weeks).
Abortion
by Pill (RU-486)
A non-surgical
method of terminating pregnancy has been approved by the Food
and Drug Administration for use in the United States. This method
uses a combination of medications. Mifeprex (also known as RU-486
or mifepristone) blocks a hormone needed to sustain pregnancy.
Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the uterine
contents. The FDA has approved the use of this combination of
medications to terminate pregnancies up to 7 weeks. This process
is less invasive than a surgical procedure and is highly recommended
for terminating early pregnancy.
Emergency Contraception (Morning
After Pill)
Emergency
Contraception, known as the "Morning After Pill", can
now be used within 120 hours (5 days) of an episode of unprotected
intercourse. This method is approximately 85% effective in preventing
pregnancy.
Emergency
Contraception involves taking two doses of medication 12 hours
apart. The first dose should be taken as soon as possible, but
no later than 120 hours from unprotected intercourse. You should
have a normal period within 3 weeks. If you do not, you should
return to our office for a pregnancy test.
Free Pregnancy Testing
Pregnancy
tests are done in our office on a walk-in basis. In most cases,
this takes about 5 minutes so an appointment is not necessary.
There is no charge for our standard urine test. This test can
detect a pregnancy as early as 2 weeks after a missed period.
First morning urine is not needed.
We offer another
urine pregnancy test that can detect a pregnancy as early as 7
to 10 days after conception. Blood tests can be ordered by the
physician.
STD/HIV Testing
Our
facility offers testing and treatment for urinary tract infections,
yeast infections, and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea,
chlamydia, and trichomonis. We can also test and treat symptoms
for herpes and HPV.
